SMBC Group joins hands with UNICEF to help millions of Indonesians affected by the COVID-19 pandemic
JAKARTA, 2 July 2020 – The Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group, Inc (President and Group CEO: Jun Ohta; hereinafter referred to as “SMBC Group”) presented UNICEF with a 100 million yen (13.17 billion rupiah) donation today, to provide assistance for Indonesians affected by the Covid-19 pandemic.
As the disruptions caused by COVID-19 will have lifelong consequences for the health, safety, well-being and future of children in Indonesia, SMFG, also referred to as the SMBC Group, has chosen to channel the funds through UNICEF as part of its support to enhance health and educational systems as well as essential water, sanitation and hygiene services in emerging countries.
“These are challenging times for everyone all over the world. It is more important now than ever for a global collaboration to find ways to overcome the common challenges posed by COVID-19. The donation from SMBC Group to UNICEF exemplifies the commitment by SMBC Group to continue to Indonesia’s economy and society, including and especially in a time of global health crisis which has caused immediate impact in people’s livelihood,” said Ryuji Nishisaki, Senior Managing Executive Officer, Deputy Head of Global Business Unit, SMFG.
As a global financial group, SMBC Group is highly concerned about the impact of the pandemic on people’s lives as well as on the economy. Through its global network of companies, SMBC Group supports organizations engaged in preventing the spread of COVID-19 and the development of treatments, those engaged in humanitarian support, and efforts toward the enhancement of education, welfare, and cultural activities.
Since the first case of COVID-19 was reported in Indonesia, UNICEF has been leading efforts with the Government, the World Health Organization and other partners to respond to the pandemic. The support from SMBC Group will help UNICEF to continue its programs to slow the spread of COVID-19 and minimize its impact on children in Indonesia.
“During this extraordinary time, UNICEF is pleased to accept this assistance from SMBC Group. This will allow us to further expand our response programs to mitigate the COVID-19 pandemic’s impact on the health and livelihoods of children and women,” said UNICEF Representative Debora Comini.
Similarly, through the BTPN Peduli initiative, Bank BTPN’s employees have gathered donations amounting to 166 million rupiah which was channeled through Perhimpunan Dokter Umum Indonesia (PDUI) to provide personal protective equipment (PPE) to various health facilities in 10 provinces throughout Indonesia.
“In such uncertain times, we need to stay united and prioritize collaboration to help those directly affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. We are grateful to have the opportunity to partner with PDUI to help alleviate the burden of providing PPE for our health workers who are facing severe challenges in their workplaces,” said Ongki Wanadjati Dana, Chief Executive Officer of Bank BTPN.
