Jenius from Bank BTPN Appreciates Arrest of Two Suspects in Bank Fraud Case

Jakarta, 13 October 2021 – PT Bank BTPN Tbk (“Bank BTPN”) appreciates the Jakarta Police’s rigorous efforts in investigating a bank fraud case that caused losses to Bank BTPN customers, and in chasing and arresting people allegedly involved in the crime.

Darmadi Sutanto, Deputy President Director of Bank BTPN, said the arrest was a follow-up action by the police after Bank BTPN filed a report in July, and said this should be an important lesson and a reprimand to bank crime perpetrators that Bank BTPN takes seriously every fraud case that happens to and causes losses to its customers.

“We prioritize the security of our customers’ data and funds, and we ensure it is safe for anyone to perform transactions on Jenius of Bank BTPN as long as he/she keeps his/her personal data a secret, such as One-Time Password (OTP), Personal Identification Number (PIN), and password,” said Darmadi.

“We also would like to thank our customers who have become more aware of the importance of protecting their personal data that we have recorded zero fraud cases in Jenius of Bank BTPN in the past few months.”

Darmadi said Bank BTPN fully supports the investigation process within the police and will fulfil the police’s request if asked to provide further information.

In a press conference earlier today, Jakarta Police Spokesman Comr. Yusri Yunus said the alleged perpetrators performed their modus operandi by disguising themselves as Bank BTPN staff members and contacting their victims.

“Affected victims then followed the instructions from perpetrators who had sent customers login details and asked them to fill out forms with their data and OTP. After perpetrators obtained all customers’ data, they took over the customers’ accounts and emptied their bank accounts,” said Yusri.

In efforts to help prevent customers from falling victim to social engineering, Jenius of Bank BTPN continuously adds digital banking security measures in its system, using layered technology, to also ensure customers’ comfort and security in performing transactions.

“Bank BTPN has met banking security standards and Bank BTPN constantly adds security measures in its digital banking system in line with technological developments and times, to make sure that our customers’ data is well protected,” said Darmadi.

“It takes a collaboration of all living in a digital ecosystem in ensuring customers’ data security and protection. This collaboration needs to participation of, not only financial services institutions, but also other digital services providers in the financial technology industry, regulators, law enforcement agencies, and customers,” Darmadi added.

Bank BTPN continuously educates customers of Jenius, part of Bank BTPN, and wider public members, about efforts that they can do to secure their personal and secret data and information to anticipate potential digital crimes, as well as about features in Jenius application that will help them secure their data during transactions because Bank BTPN prioritizes customers’ fund and data security. Through Jenius, Bank BTPN also has created a page on digital security education on website jenius.com/pages/jeniusaman.

In addition, Bank BTPN also has shut down access to Jenius on the website to minimize the risk of social engineering crimes by cybercrime perpetrators. In a social engineering scheme, perpetrators manipulate their victims through, for example, phone calls, SMS, e-mails, or social media platforms.

Bank BTPN has implemented a one-device policy to further protect customers’ Jenius accounts. The policy only allows customers to access Jenius and perform transactions on one verified device. Customers will have to call Jenius Help 1500 365 or go to Bank BTPN’s nearest Sinaya branch office should they want to migrate their Jenius account to another device.
