Jenius Study Reveals Digital-Savvy Behavior Trends for Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr 2024

Jakarta, 26 March 2024 - In Indonesia, people are warmly embracing the month of Ramadan, known for its abundance of blessings. Unlike last year, which was still marked by a post-pandemic atmosphere, the digital-savvy communities are now more confident to engage in various activities during Ramadan. These activities include starting businesses, going on vacations, and even renovating homes. This shift in behavior has also led to changes in how the digital-savvy communities manage their Holiday Allowance (THR) this year compared to 2023, particularly in terms of spending, saving, and investing allocations.

To welcome Eid al-Fitr, Jenius, a life finance solution from Bank BTPN, initiated a survey titled "Jenius Study: Digital-Savvy Behavior during Ramadan & Eid al-Fitr 2024," conducted from February 28th to March 18th, 2024. The survey engaged 233 respondents aged 17-40 from diverse areas including Jabodetabek, Bandung, Surabaya, Sidoarjo, Semarang, Medan, Palembang, Makassar, Manado, and Aceh.

The findings of the Jenius Study reveal that digital-savvy communities this year are prioritizing a more meaningful Ramadan by enhancing the quality of worship, managing their THR more effectively, and spending time with family.

Febri Rusli, Digital Banking Partnership Head of Bank BTPN, highlighted a shift in the allocation of THR in 2024 compared to 2023. "This year, we observed a change in how the digital-savvy communities allocate their THR during Ramadan compared to the previous year. In 2023, the majority (41%) focused on saving their THR, with 40% using it for Ramadan shopping, and 19% opting to invest their THR. However, this year, we've seen a notable increase in THR allocation for Ramadan spending, from 40% to 52%, which marks a 12% increase. Meanwhile, the allocation for saving and investing has reached 29% and 19%, respectively," Febri explained.

This shift in THR allocation aligns with 58% of digital-savvy communities who anticipate increased spending during Ramadan this year. Expenditure allocations include purchasing new clothes (43%), traveling back home (30%), giving zakat and alms (30%), and spending on suhoor and iftar meals (29%), as well as gathering for iftar (29%). In addition to Ramadan necessities, the digital-savvy communities also allocate THR for paying off installments/debts, business capital, vacations, home renovations, and purchasing gadgets/electronic goods.

Moreover, they also proactively address additional needs by considering loan options. Compared to last year, there has been a 13% increase in the number of digital-savvy communities opting for loans. According to the survey findings, 35% of them intend to take out loans during Ramadan 2024 for various purposes, including Eid preparations (60%), business capital (46%), and home renovations (18%).

Aligned with the needs and behaviors of the digital-savvy communities, Jenius has identified five beneficial features to assist in managing finances during Ramadan and leading up to Eid al-Fitr. These include Flexi Cash, Jenius QR, Jenius Paylater, Jenius Credit Card, and Jenius Debit Card.
