Bank BTPN Empowers Communities through MSME Training
Semarang, July 27, 2022 – Micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) play a vital role in supporting the national economy by providing employment opportunities to support people’s welfare.
The importance of MSMEs’ role in the national economy has inspired PT Bank BTPN Tbk (Bank BTPN) to continue to strengthen the MSME sector in Indonesia, especially now that it is necessary for MSMEs to transform their business digitally in order to adapt to the new habits of their consumers.
Communications & Daya Head Bank BTPN Andrie Darusman said that in line with its vision, Bank BTPN continues to strive to bring impactful changes to everyone, including MSME players that make an economic pillar at the micro, small, and medium levels.
"We manifest this commitment through the Daya program to empower and increase the capacity of our customers, as well as general public, sustainably by providing opportunities to grow and live a more meaningful life," said Andrie when speaking at a business seminar for Bank BTPN customers in Semarang, Central Java, today.
The seminar, which bears the theme “Government and Private Participation in Encouraging Business Transformation of MSMEs in Semarang”, was also attended by Semarang Deputy Mayor Hevearita Gunaryanti Rahayu and a business practitioner from business community Tangan Di Atas, Eko Novianto, as speakers.
This seminar is aimed at sharing knowledge with Bank BTPN's MSME customers through the Daya program, a community capacity-building program, particularly designed for Bank BTPN's customers.
“We’re collaborating with the Semarang administration and Tangan Di Atas as part of empowerment programs in Semarang, by holding a workshop on digital marketing for MSMEs in Central Java, especially in Semarang. This training also helps MSME players in using digital technology to run their businesses, including to market their products through a digital platform to reach a wider market. This can be a solution to develop business and business capacity,” said Andrie.
Bank BTPN's vision is also in line with the government's vision of strengthening the MSME sector.
In a press statement on May 20, 2022, Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto said the contribution of MSMEs reached around 61% of the national gross domestic product (GDP) and absorbed 97% of the total workforce. In every crisis period, MSMEs even become a buffer, resilient, and can recover well.
Bank BTPN has a strong commitment to realizing sustainable financial management and community capacity building, from corporations to micro-scale communities. As part of the commitment, the Daya program is designed to provide training and education for MSME players through a specific curriculum throughout Indonesia, including in Semarang, based on four pillars, namely 'Self-Capacity Development', 'Financial Literacy', 'Business Capacity Building', and 'Sustainable Living'.
Siti Rochanah and Sudarko are two of the many MSME players who have gained benefits from the Daya program. A culinary entrepreneur, Siti Rochanah started her business from wheat-processed products, and in 2010 she began producing fish-based products under the Iwak Nyuzz brand. Siti said she had the opportunity to access business knowledge that brings change to her business and life through the Daya program.
“The Daya program from Bank BTPN enabled me to reach a wider market outside Java. I was also given the insight to run a business more efficiently, such as replacing plastic for product packaging with paperfoil. My production has increased from 100 packs per day to 5,000. Even my turnover has jumped by 500% from what I made when I started my business,” said Siti in a separate occasion.
Sudarko, a travel agency and spa service entrepreneur with the Mitra Aiko Utama business brand, also shares his experience participating in the Daya program. He said that he has received a lot of business insights from Daya's training, such as determining a more specific target of customers and making his business hours shorter and more efficient as many of his customers work from home during the pandemic.
"I managed to reduce operational costs from consumption of wate and electricity, and even expenses on employee overtime hours by only cutting operational hours during the pandemic, and my income increased by 10-30% per month accordingly," said Sudarko, who has been running his business more than 10 years with his wife.
The Daya program can also be accessed through a digital platform, namely www.Daya.id and Bank BTPN has received notable recognition and awards, one of which is an award for sustainability innovation from IDX Channel Anugerah Innovation Indonesia. As of June 2022, the Daya program has seen 1.3 million participants in 2,844 activities.
“The many benefits that our customers and general public members have gained from the program have become a spark to and driven us at Bank BTPN to utilize the most of our capacity in the banking sector in realizing empowerment programs to improve people's quality of life,” said Andrie.
