Beware of Viruses / Worms, Trojans, Spyware and Bots

Virus / Worm

Virus / worm is a computer program that can spread itself from one computer to another without being realized by the computer owner. Virus / worm can damage the operating system, applications and data on the infected computer.

The difference between virus and worm is on the way its spread. Virus occupies space in storage media (i.e., attached to a file or stored in the hard disk boot sector) and generally spread through USB flash disk, email attachment, a file that is downloaded from the Internet, or through a visit to a web page that deliberately spread the virus. While the worm spreads through network. There is also a joint program between viruses and worms, which is stored on the storage media, but spreads through the network.

Some examples of the impact of virus/worm infections:

  • The computer becomes unstable and often 'hang' (freezed)
  • The computer becomes slow
  • Data stored on the storage media is corrupted/damaged, or being illegally sent to the other party through network.
  • The application does not work properly.
  • The password that is typed in using computer keyboard can be intercepted and sent to the other party for fraud purposes.

Trojan

Trojan is a type of virus that masquerades as another file that is secure, i.e., an Excel document attached to the email. The computer user is tricked to perform actions that can spread the trojan, such as opening the attachment that was thought to be a normal file, which in fact contains a trojan program.

After successfully infecting a computer, trojan is able to illegally send important information, such as User ID and Password, to another party or do harmful actions to the infected computer.

Spyware

Spyware is a kind of computer program created to 'steal' confidential/personal information from the infected computer and sends it to a specific location on the internet for later taken by the author. The information that becomes its main target, for example: credit card number, User ID and Password / PIN, account numbers, email addresses, etc.

Spyware can be installed via, such as, email attachments, programs that are installed from unverified website or other sources.

However, unlike the virus that is more destructive, spyware works silently in order to not easily being found, so it's easier for it to collect the information/data which is targeted by the spyware creator.

Bot (roBot)

Bot is a kind of computer program that can allow the infected computer to be controlled by other people remotely over the network. The Bot creator will be able to do anything with the infected computer.

Generally, the infected computer is being used to spread out Spams, Viruses, Worms, or to attack other computers.
