BANK INDONESIA LAUNCHES 2008 AS THE YEAR OF BANKING EDUCATION

Jakarta (admin). Bank Indonesia and the banking industry have recently made a commitment to launch 2008 as the year of the public banking education with the slogan "Let's Go to the Bank". "This program will eventually build a society of financial management capability that will improve their quality of life", announced Deputy Governor of Bank Indonesia Muliaman D. Hadad in a press conference regarding the promulgation of 2008 as the Year of Banking Education on Tuesday, 22nd January 2008 in Jakarta.

Such commitment will be translated into a promulgation kick-off on 27th January 2008 in Jakarta. The event will be attended by the First Lady Ani Bambang Yudhoyono and centered at the National Monument from 7:00 Western Indonesian Time, and the same celebrations will also take place at the same time throughout the country. The central event at the National Monument will be attended by at total of 11,000 bankers who will form a human chain, as a symbol of the solidarity of the Banking Community in promoting banking education. "This education program is expected to stimulate the public interest in banking and to enhance the public familiarity with the banking products and services as well as the rights and obligations as a bank customer," Muliaman added.

The major events with this program include the donation of 10,000 textbooks and the launching of 2 (two) cars, i.e. Smart Car and Education Car (in Indonesian: Mobil Edukasi, abbreviated as MOBED), Bank Indonesia scholarship given to several universities, the signing of the cooperation agreement on the Banking Education for the Public between Bank Indonesia, a number of government agencies, and Indonesian Consumer Protection Foundation YLKI as well as the cooperation agreement between commercial banks and their partners in banking education. Since the launching covers the national scope, MOBED will also be launched in six other cities, i.e. Medan, Bandung, Semarang, Surabaya, Denpasar and Makassar.

"The promulgation of 2008 as the Year of Banking Education taking place on 27th January 2008 is just a starting point for the implementation of banking educational program to be conducted by all banks in Indonesia. In this regard, all banks have included the banking education program in their business plan of 2008 and of the subsequent years," Muliaman remarked. (FDT, source: www.bi.go.id)
